Have you enjoyed the drawings I've shared lately? Maybe you have ~ and maybe a part of you hasn't known what to make of them. When I first started exploring art journaling this way, a part of me had judgments about the drawings. I thought they were goofy and not "professional". 🙃 However, another part of me felt drawn in and knew that this was something I needed to try. I trust that part, and so I listened. What I've found is that while these drawings may look simple and child-like, they're also powerful and healing. A lot of things can be true at the same time!

Don't Hesitate by Mary Oliver
If you suddenly and unexpectedly feel joy,
don’t hesitate. Give in to it. There are plenty
of lives and whole towns destroyed or about
to be. We are not wise, and not very often
kind. And much can never be redeemed.
Still, life has some possibility left. Perhaps this
is its way of fighting back, that sometimes
something happens better than all the riches
or power in the world. It could be anything,
but very likely you notice it in the instant
when love begins. Anyway, that’s often the case.
Anyway, whatever it is, don’t be afraid
of its plenty. Joy is not made to be a crumb. |

To prepare for this practice, find a place and time where you won't be disturbed. You will want paper and something to write with, too. When you're ready, find a comfortable, upright seated position.
🔎 QUESTION 🔎
To begin, bring awareness to your heart. Put one or both hands on your heart. Feel the warmth of your hands and let that warmth register. Take a few breaths here.
Turn your attention inward: How does spring make itself known within you? Can you notice any areas of your life where you are warming up? Where you feel less closed, less dark, less cold? Remember that just as there is no wrong way to be a tulip or a daffodil, there’s no wrong way to be you. There’s no wrong way for your inner springtime to unfold. It might be subtle; it might be bold. Reflect on this and then write down whatever is arising.
👯 CONNECT 👯
Now that you've acknowledged the springtime inside of you, see if there is anything this warmed-up place is trying to communicate to you; anything that it wants you to know. Or maybe a request it is making of you. Some way that it would like you to take care of it. This part might communicate without words. Sit, notice and listen for a few moments. Write down what you hear, see or sense about what (if anything) this part is saying to you.
Next, is there something that you would like to communicate to this warming up area of yourself? Some question or expression of gratitude? Or maybe an expression of commitment to nurture it as best you can? Just listen and notice what feels true for you, There may not be anything to communicate to this part of you. Maybe it feels right to just witness yourself; to just be present with this experience of warming up. Once you have a sense of this, write down what's true for you about how you connect with this part of you
🎨 CREATE 🎨
See if there's a symbol or a color or image you can keep with you as you head into spring. Something that will remind you of this warming-up part of yourself. Let whatever emerges register in your awareness. Draw or write down what arises for you.
Imagine allowing your heart to hold it. If it's a symbol, imagine that it is resting in your heart. If it’s a color, imagine that your heart is glowing with this color. If it’s an image, imagine that it is inside your heart. Take a few breaths here, allowing your heart to hold this for you. (really, pause and breathe)
When you're ready, let go of any effort to imagine anything, knowing that your heart is holding this warming-up for you. It’s right there, in your heart. You can return to it at any time.
Let your hands rest in your lap. Notice how you feel in your body. As best you can, allow yourself to be exactly as you are and to feel just the way that you feel.
Read over what you have written and drawn. Note any actions you might want to take, based on what you discovered in this practice. ❤️ |
